According to China Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) main statistics on intellectual property, from January to May 2020, 550,000 invention patents were applied and 166,000 were authorized; 996,000 utility model patents were applied and 759,000 were authorized; 250,000 design patent were applied and 288,000 were authorized; 23,600 PCT international patent applications were accepted; 21,600 re-examination requests were received. The number of trademark applications in China was 1.044 million, and the number of trademark registrations was 3,287,000. 306 enterprises approved the use of special signs for geographical indication products; 4,101 applications for registration of layout designs for integrated circuits.
I. Patent
From January to May 2020, there were 550,000 invention patent applications in China, and 166,000 invention patents were authorized. As of the end of May 2020, the effective amount of invention patents in China was 2.78 million, of which the mainland China’s (excluding Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) effective patents were 1.96 million, and the number of invention patents per 10,000 people reached 14.
From January to May, there were 996,000 applications for utility model patents and 759,000 were authorized. As of the end of May 2020, the effective amount of utility model patents was 5.739 million.
From January to May, there were 250,000 design patents applications and 288,000 design patents were authorized. As of the end of May 2020, the effective amount of design patents was 1.941 million.
From January to May, CNIPA accepted 23,600 PCT international patent applications, of which 21,200 were from China.
From January to May, CNIPA accepted 21,600 requests for re-examination, and closed 21,600 cases, accepted 2,100 requests for invalidation and closed 3,500 cases.
II. Trademark
From January to May 2020, the number of trademark applications in China was 3.287 million, and the number of trademark registrations was 2.317million. By the end of May 2020, there were 27.175million valid registered trademarks.
From January to May, there were 54,000 applications for trademark opposition in China and 55,000 examinations of oppositions were completed.
From January to May, CNIPA received 3,124 applications for the Madrid trademark international registration by Chinese applicants.
From January to May, CNIPA received 130,000 applications for various trademark review cases, and closed 151,000 cases.
III. Geographical Indications and Layout Designs of Integrated Circuits
From January to May 2020, CNIPA approved the use of 306 geographical indication product-dedicated enterprises and 360 registered geographical indication trademarks. As of May 2020, a total of 2,385 geographical indication products have been approved, 8,537 enterprises have been approved for the use of special signs, and 5,678 geographical indication trademarks have been registered.
From January to May 2020, there were 4101 applications for registration of integrated circuit layout designs and 4074 certificates issued.
